[*Part 5 of My Goal Mastery Series: A System to Rule Them All]

Okay, so you’ve identified the problems in whatever system you’re using right now to set and achieve your goals, you’ve set the right goals and created your big-picture vision, you’ve chosen a system to track your projects, and you created your binder with the Key Elements I shared so you can keep track of all this in one place.

Awesome! Next, we’re going to look at apps you can use that will support you on your Goal Mastery Journey.

(And yes I know this blog is about aligning with and being guided by your True Self so you can live your purpose and potential, but as part of that, you still need a rock-solid system to provide the foundation for you to follow through on your ideas and initiatives. Your inner guidance can tell you what direction to go, and also point you in the direction of the tools and resources you need to get there, but it’s still up to you to use those things to actualize your purpose and potential in the physical world.)

This post is going to be the most useful for you if you’ve already read Parts 1-4 of this series. Today we’re looking at apps that can make your (our!) organizational journey easier.

I’ve researched and played around with about 30 different apps and narrowed it down to my faves. I recommend just picking one or two and mastering them before adding any others.

7 Apps That Will Help You Master Your Goals

  1. Trello: (Use for projects & tasks related to projects) This uses a Kan Ban style system, which I explained here. I love this app because it’s easy to use, you can drag and drop items from one list to another, and you get a great visual of how you’re doing on your projects. Because I’m more of a tactile person, I’m also creating a board for my office wall that will do basically the same thing. I’ll still use my Trello account, but probably just to track my individual projects. Go here to see some of the boards others have created and get inspired.
  2. Google Drive: (Use to store documents you will need to access regularly) This provides 15 GB of free online storage. I use it every day to access my files wherever I go. My Personal Organizing Log is kept here, as are all my client handouts, book drafts and so on. I created categorical files to keep all my documents organized (books, blog ideas, website, etc.) so I can access them quickly. To edit documents within Drive, you will also need Google Docs (which also comes with sheets, slides and forms).
  3. Google Keep: (Use this as a fun daily dashboard) I use this as my daily dashboard, where I keep things I need to see every day: my top 3 priorities, upcoming client sessions, courses I’ve signed up for, checklist for my morning routine, my favourite affirmations, inspiring quotes. I love it.
  4. Evernote: (Use this as your online brain to store and organize ideas) I first tried this a few years ago but found it hard to organize and track my files. In the past month, I learned how to use tags, and now I’m in love with it.
    1. As part of my new Goal Mastery System, I’m going to use this as my “brain”, where I store all my ideas and related research for easy reference. To set up my tags I used this tutorial by Michael Hyatt.
    2. If you feel drawn to try GTD, explained here, then I recommend doing this free online course on how to set up GTD in Evernote. Make sure you’re using the older version of Evernote (you can switch it back). I am incorporating a few of the GTD ideas into my own system, but not the whole thing as I found it overwhelming.
  5. Todoist: (Use this to track your recurring daily tasks and top priorities). This is a simple list app that comes highly recommended by a lot of people online. My favourite thing about it is that it’s great for recurring things. For example, with my morning routine. However, I don’t think I’m going to use it as I can’t get it to work on my Microsoft-based phone. For now, I’m using OneNote to write lists on the go, but it’s not great—it just happened to come with my phone and it works for now.
  6. Toggl: (Use this to motivate you and track your time). This is an awesome free timer that tracks how much time you spend on each task you do. It also sends you encouraging messages when you’ve done a lot of work in one day, which I found motivating.
  7. ActionAlly: (Use this if you really struggle with procrastination or distraction and want help to stay on track) During my 7-day free trial with this app I was more productive than I had been in months. It really keeps you focused. You also get a mini-course on productivity, which was useful. The app is a bit buggy but he’s working on a comprehensive next version. With this app, you will never lose track of your top 3 priorities for the day. It’s US$37 but worth it if you struggle with staying focused on your priorities (as I do!).

Right now, because I’m still tweaking my own system, I’m using my old-fashioned binder (as outlined in this post) as my “home base” for my routines, tracking and check ins, projects lists and so on. But I am also using a few of these apps to help me out, and I do foresee I time when I put my whole system online so I can access it from anywhere. ;)

If you feel inspired, try some of these out and report back on whether they helped you or not. And also if you’ve found any other apps that you feel are really helping you live your purpose and potential let us know in the comments section below or on my Facebook page.
