(*Part 2 of My Goal Mastery Series: A System to Rule Them All)

Hey Trailblazer,

Last week, we looked at the 3 higher level steps you need to take to create a goal mastery system that works for you. This week I was going to go straight into exploring existing systems, but I realized (while doing work on my own system) that we were missing an important step.

The whole point of what we’re doing here together is creating a system that makes it easy to live our purpose and potential. So we don’t just want a system for achieving our goals—we also need a system for choosing the right goals, which are aligned with who we ARE and what we really want (as opposed to what we think we want—because we think it will make us happy).

For example, after doing these exercises, I realized that one of my goals was to spend more time hanging out with my trailblazing girlfriends—so last night I held a Prince movie tribute night (Hell yes! “Purple rain…purple rain…whoo! If you know what I’m singing about come on raise your hand!”) and potluck at the condo. I booked the private theatre, which is pretty flash, and we brought down popcorn and red wine. After the flick, we hung out on the balcony, talking about everything from relationships to spiritual experiences. It was effing awesome. I never would of thought of that as a worthy goal before going through the process I’m going to share with you below.)

I have listed the following exercises in the order I feel they should be done to get the best result (because I did them in this order and got a great result). The first exercise feeds into the second and so on, so please don’t skip any.

And yes, this will require a time investment on your part, but remember you only have to do this once every year. And really, wouldn’t you rather be in charge of steering your life journey, rather than just bouncing along hoping you end up somewhere good?

I thought so. Let’s do this!

4 Exercises to Set The Right Goals

  1. Start with your core desired feelings. Danielle Laporte has built her empire around this with good reason—because it works. While it’s absolutely worth buying her book and doing the in-depth approach, if you’re impatient like me and want answers fast, watch this video where Marie Forleo asks Danielle to guide her viewers through the process. Try to narrow it down to about 5 feelings.
  2. Set end goals not means goals. This simple exercise (3 questions) was created by multi-millionaire entrepreneur and mindset leader Vishen Lakhiani. He used it to shift his own direction when he was running a successful business and still not feeling happy. It helps you set goals that will actually lead to happiness. I am a huge fan of Vishen and his teachings, and I really enjoyed doing this one. It left me feeling excited and motivated to live the rest of my life (which is what we all deserve to feel!).
  3. Write down your “6 Horizons of Focus”. This is the highest level of the GTD (Get Things Done) system I mentioned in my last post. But even if you have no intentions of using the full system, you will still want to know your “6 Horizons”—a macro and micro map of what you want to do in this lifetime. This is my favourite overview that I found online  because it’s aimed at entrepreneurs, and here’s the official one, which is aimed mainly at people who work for larger companies.
  4. Create Your Giving vs Receiving Mindmap. This is one of my own tools, and it gave me a massive breakthrough (I haven’t shared it with any clients yet; I just invented it last week!). It was created from the realization that we can’t live those “6 Horizons of Focus” listed above if we aren’t fully supported. I’m famous for giving way too much and then wondering why I feel like crap. Maybe you can relate? So….what are you contributing to the world and what support do you need in return to fully contribute that at your highest potential? Let’s create a mindmap. (I shared a photo of mine below! As you can see, it doesn’t need to be pretty ha)
    1. On a piece of paper draw 2 large circles beside each other.
    2. At the top of the left circle write “Receiving” and at the top of the right circle write “Giving”.
    3. After having completed the other exercises on this list, you should have a good idea of what you want to contribute to this world. Write those things in the right-hand circle.
    4. After you are done, write down all the support you would like to invite and receive from the Universe in order to have the energy and motivation to contribute at your highest potential. (I wrote things like: beautiful spaces to work in that inspire me, vibrant health, consistent monthly income, clothes I love, quality time with people I love, energy treatments and massages, getaway adventures to inspiring places, sharing meals with authentic and innovative people, and of course an amazing organizational system that really works for me). Later you will want to include these on your list of goals so you can be sure you are taking baby steps toward them every day.

Now you have your homework set out for you for this week! Remember, it’s going to be worth it, because it will help you get super-focused on doing the things that will lead to living your purpose and potential with joy—which is what you came here to do.

Also, you’re going to need to have this done to move on to the next assignment next week. ;)

In my next post, I’m going to show you “6 Systems That Will Help You Set & Meet Goals”.

Here are all the posts I have planned for this series:

  1. 3 Steps to Create a Goal Mastery System That Works for You (Finally!)
